Show off your photos with the new Slideshow
Take a look at our latest tool for your blog: the Slideshow page element. This feature lets you add a slick little slideshow of your photos from Picasa Web Albums, Flickr, Photobucket, or any site that supports Media RSS.The photos will show up in your blog’s sidebar, gently fading into one another. Your readers will be able to go forward and backward, pause, and click through to the photo’s web page. You can also make a slideshow of public photos based on a tag or label.Like all page elements, Slideshow requires that your blog is using Layouts templates. Still need to switch? Read our help article on the topic. In case you missed it: Want to see everyone’s photos? Watch Blogger Play.

New from AdSense: video units
AdSense recently introduced a feature called video units, that lets you include relevant YouTube video on your blog, and make money from ads on it. Here’s what they have to say about it:
"We're excited about the launch of video units -- a new way to enrich your blog with quality, relevant video content in an embedded, customizable player. Simply embed a snippet of code and have relevant YouTube partner content streamed to your blog. You can choose categories of video to target to your site, select content from individual YouTube partners, or have video automatically targeted to your blog's content. Companion and text overlay ads are relevant and non-intrusive. To further blend the YouTube player into your blog, you can also customize the color scheme and layout as well as choose from three different player sizes."AdSense Help has some more information about video units. Once you’ve created the code for a video unit, you can easily add it to your blog’s template using an HTML/JavaScript page element.

Auto-savory Blogger Posting
Today we're adding autosaving of draft posts to the Blogger post editor. Now you don't have to feel so bad about browser crashes, random laptop restarts, or that hamster vs. gerbil war going on behind your desk that keeps knocking your power cord out of the socket, because Blogger is automatically saving as you type! It's doing it to me right now. Even if I...*smash*Whoops! I just pretended that my browser crashed for the purpose of illustrating that the above paragraph is still intact, thanks to autosave! So say "goodbye" to lost blog posts. You won't miss them.As you work on a new or draft post in the Blogger post editor, the page will periodically send a copy of the text, title, labels, etc. to our servers. We do this about once a minute, unless you type a lot, in which case we'll save as soon as you stop typing, just to be on the safe side. You'll know it's happening because the "Save Now" button at the bottom of the page will turn into a gray "Saved" button. We'll autosave new posts (they'll become drafts) as well as draft posts that you edit. We won't autosave posts that are currently published, since you don't want your readers to see your updates while you're working on them.On top of this, we're revamping the post editor's keyboard shortcuts to make them a bit more sane. Now Ctrl-P publishes, Ctrl-S saves a draft, and Ctrl-D switches from published to draft. We moved Preview over to Ctrl-Shift-P.

But we've got a classic problem that comes with growth - there's too much to do, and too few people to do it all. Therefore, we're looking to hire some UI experts (both visual and interaction designers, as well as software engineers) to join the Blogger Team here at Google, and help us plan and build Blogger's next generation features. If you're interested, send an email to jobs@blogger.com with your resumé, and which of the following job descriptions you're interested in:

Old Blogger is dead! Long live Blogger!
Today at Blogger HQ we accomplished one of our most significant milestones ever: we changed old Blogger’s monitoring from “page us when it goes down” to “page us if it comes back to life in a horrifying, zombie state.”Most of you probably haven’t noticed, since you’ve been happily (we hope) using new Blogger for several weeks or months now. But we’re excited to be done with it, since now we can focus 100% on the new Blogger and all we want to add to it.While old Blogger totters off to realize its dream of getting to level 70 in the Burning Crusade, let’s take some time to remember what it took to replace the old Blogger with the new.14 August 2006: The new version of Blogger launches as a public beta23 August 2006: Blogger’s 7th birthday30 August 2006: Edit HTML added to beta’s Layouts2 September 2006: Login box fiasco solved5 September 2006: Beta Known Issues blog launched21 September 2006: Mobile posting added4 October 2006: Picasa support added26 October 2006: Week of Old Blogger meltdowns2 November 2006: Beta declared “feature complete” with FTP support10 November 2006: All new accounts created on Blogger in beta12 November 2006: New mobile accounts created on Blogger in beta11 December 2006: Team blogs allowed to switch to Blogger in beta19 December 2006: New Blogger taken out of beta4 January 2007: BlogThis! added24 January 2007: Percentage of users required to switch to new Blogger15 February 2007: All users required to switch to new Blogger on login21 February 2007: FTP publishing reliability improved4 March 2007: Performance problems with especially busy blogs resolved28 March 2007: Offline process to move blogs from old to new Blogger begins16 April 2007: 1000th Blog of Note24 April 2007: All blogs moved off old Blogger, save [this] one26 April 2007: Blogger Buzz moves to new Blogger, turns off lights on its way out27 April 2007: DNS change to point www.blogger.com to new Blogger4 May 2007: Old Blogger physically dismantledAnd that’s how it happened. AJAX Search API Hackery
If you're interested in Blogger template hacking-via-javascript, be sure to check out Google's AJAX Search API. While its home on Code contains a bunch of interesting sample apps for learning and tinkering, Google Engineer Mark Lucovsky recently published an ajaxy, bloggy playground on BlogSpot: http://ajaxsearch.blogspot.com/Notable stuff:
the sidebar's "Google Search" field searches multiple indexes (Web and BlogSearch), as well as individual sites (in this case the AJAX Search API blog, the Google blog and www.blogger.com) - you can customize all of these things
the sidebar's "Video Search" field displays (and plays!) results inline
links in the main blog section can dynamically link directly into the sidebar's embedded Map and Video boxes (try clicking the 'Sakana' and 'Jimi Hendrix' links)Mark's post on the API's blog has further details about the tweaks and integrations. If you whip up something nifty on your Blogger blog using the AJAX Search API, post about it and link to this post, so we can see it in the Backlinks. Thanks!Update:
Hoctro's Place has applied the above to Blogger beta - nice work!
Hoctro also has a Blogger Beta Playground, so be sure to check out some of his neat hacks.
Zizukabi has an AJAX Search Widget in his sidebar, though I don't read Korean so I'm not 100% sure about what he's saying. :)
Mark Lucovsky posted a beta blog with the same functionality.Update #2:
Mark posted another AJAX Search API example, the Video Bar.

Moblogging on the beta
Do you remember the Blogger Mobile jingle? I am happy to report that we have added “the rest” to the new version of Blogger in beta.If you have a mobile blog already, we’ll now let you switch over to the beta (if you meet the other criteria, that is). Then just keep sending your pictures and messages to go@blogger.com, and we’ll post them for you.Already using the new Blogger? You can create a new mobile blog simply by sending an e-mail or MMS from your phone to go@alpha.blogger.com. The “alpha” tells us to create the blog on the new version of Blogger. In this same release we’ve fixed some feed related things as well: comment feeds are now showing the latest comments, and pagination works, which solves this known issue. Also, feed URLs on the beta are now also served up from your blog’s domain in addition to from beta.blogger.com.

Notable Blogs
(just linking to a few notable blogs that crossed my path in the past few days)1. The Boing Boing crew just launched a new blog on Blogger beta - the Boing Boing Digital Emporium:
"The four of us at Boing Boing love music, comics, videos, and books. We especially love them in digital format so we can store them on capacious hard drives, instead of cramming more things into our already overstuffed bookcases. And we super-extra especially love them to be DRM-free so we can read, watch, and listen to them on our MP3 players, on our handheld devices, on our computers, and in our cars.""That's why we created the Boing Boing Digital Emporium, launching today. We'll be selling our favorite DRM-free digital goods and giving the the majority of the proceeds (minus the transaction charges imposed by Paypal and Payloadz) to the creators of those goods."2. Comment Like a Pirate Day
Ahoy sailors. The infamous pirate Edward Teach once wrote in his ship’s log (or “p’slog” in 18th century slang):
Such a day found one with a great deal of liquor on board, so kept the company hot, damned hot; then all things went well again [cite]Yar. Now, had Teach written this on a blog, his crew may have wanted to comment on it (“Pass me th’ bottle,” “when can we go back to Port Royal?,” “why’s the rum gone?,” &c.). Until today, they may have had a great deal of trouble, above and beyond the significant scarcity of reliable Internet access in 1718 colonial America. A pair of issues have plagued Blogger and the Blogger beta: Blogger users unable to comment on beta blogs, and beta users unable to comment on Blogger blogs. For the benefit of time traveling pirates with hypothetical weblogs everywhere, these issues have been well and truly keelhauled. Get thee to commenting, w’ abandon!

Flickr Support for Blogger in beta
I’m very pleased to announce that Flickr has added support for the new version of Blogger in beta! Now you can blog and post photos directly from Flickr to your beta blog. This is something that a ton of you have been requesting, and many thanks go to the Flickr folks for upgrading their site to work with the new version of Blogger. (The relevant known issue has been updated, if you’re keeping track.)Flickr is using a secure authentication method made possible by the new Blogger’s use of Google Accounts. When you want to add a Blogger beta blog to Flickr, Flickr will redirect you to google.com to enter your username and password. Read more about granting access to websites.Flickr (and other websites that support this technology) will never see your username or password; all of that information is kept securely on Google’s servers. In addition, these websites will only be authorized to post to your Blogger blog. They will not be allowed to access your seach history (if you save it, that is), your Gmail, your Google Checkout data, or any other part of your Google Account. If you ever want to deauthorize a website and disallow it from posting, you can revoke its access from your “My Account” page.Remember, never enter your Google Account login information on a website not owned by Google!

Update on image upload problems
In the past month we’ve made a number of changes to image uploading to detect and solve the problems that some folks have been having. The number of problem reports concerning image uploading have decreased substantially, so we know that we’re moving in the right direction. There are still some problems out there, however, and we’re committed to tracking them down and solving them.To that end, we’ve just released an additional change on the Blogger beta site to show you thumbnails of your photos after you upload them:We hope that this thumbnail feature will help us diagnose the remaining issues, in particular those where no error message pops up. If you still have image upload problems on the beta please report them to us so we can get them solved. Don’t forget to mention in your description whether or not you see the thumbnails! One more thing: to get all the latest fixes make sure that you clear your browser cache.I know it may sound cheesy for some frustrated bloggers but, happy photoblogging!

Known Issues for Blogger in Beta
Some of our users have expressed concerns about the lack of up-to-date information on issues and bugs they’re seeing in the new version of Blogger in beta. What are the engineers aware of? What’s being worked on? And when have bugs been fixed? We’re addressing these questions with today’s launch of Known Issues for Blogger in Beta, a new blog that will contain fresh information about the status of issues and bugs that affect you. While I am on the subject of communication, let me clarify the purpose of the various other communication channels that exist between the users and the Blogger Team:
Support form: Users can report problems with the application here to the Blogger support team. Depending on the issue the support team will answer with either some pointers to self-help information, ask for more information, or — in case of a new issue — report it to engineers for resolution. Issues that affect a large group of users will be resolved promptly (meaning that an engineer will start to work on it right away) whereas problems that just apply a single blog or account may take a little longer to fix.
Blogger Status: This venue is used by the Blogger Team to report production outages, such as database problems. This is not a place where we report known application issues.
Blogger Buzz: This blog contains information about new product features on Blogger as well as posts about cool and interesting things that go on the blogosphere.
Blogger Help Group: Here Blogger users help each other with gotchas, tricks, hacks, etc. The Blogger support and engineering teams monitor this forum and occasionaly post on issues of general interest, but it is not the goal of the Help Group to become an alternative to the Support form.I hope this note helps to clarify at which site/blog to seek help in various situations. And many thanks to the good folks on the Blogger Help Group for their feedback, which helps us provide a better service for all users.

The Design of Everyday Login Boxes
In his landmark book The Design of Everyday Things, Donald Norman writes:
The human mind is exquisitely tailored to make sense of the world. Give it the slightest clue and off it goes, providing explanation, rationalization, understanding. … Well-designed objects are easy to interpret and understand. They contain visible clues to their operation. Poorly designed objects can be difficult or frustrating to use. They provide no clues–or sometimes false clues. They trap the user and thwart the normal process of interpretation and understanding. With that, we say good-bye to the combined Blogger / Google Accounts sign-in box on our homepage. Functional? Quite (though not everyone believes me). Well-designed? Not a chance. We’ve listened to the problems with our combined login box, and we have a solution. The new login choice on the homepage should relieve any Google Accounts–related login trouble you may have. And if you’re like me and still haven’t been able to switch to the beta, you’ll be happy to find that your password manager will stop trying to fill in your Google Account login information on Blogger.Sincere apologies to everyone who was a victim of our bad design and had trouble or even couldn’t log in. We goofed on this one, and we’re sorry.

It's Alive!
A story published Thursday the UKs BBC News has ornithologists swooning. A spectacular bird long thought extinct was spotted by a lone kayaker in the Big Woods of Arkansas—he said "the creature did not look quite like anything he had seen before." So he contacted the right people and it was confirmed on video within a month. This article is amazingly blogable because it seems like every paragraph is worth highlighting and clicking BlogThis!.
"This is huge, just huge. It is kind of like finding Elvis.""It's like a funeral shroud has been pulled back, giving us a glimpse of a living bird, rising Lazarus-like from the grave.""For those of us who tenaciously cling to the idea that man can live alongside fellow species, this is the most incredible ray of hope."I like that last one the best because it makes this story into the start of something bigger. This also makes me wonder how many bird-bloggers there are out there. Seems like a blog would be a good way to share the particulars of that sort of endeavor. (Via)

MediaDailyNews reports that a man has died of starvation because he was addicted to commenting on blogs and forums and couldn't be bothered to eat. From I Link, Therefore I am:
"He was glued to his computer 24/7," (his wife) said tearfully. "He was so afraid he was going to miss an opportunity to contribute a comment or start a discussion, that he just stopped eating." She added that Wanamaker's last words were "OK Picard, stick that in your pipe and smoke it..."We are sure that this article is a joke, but we at Blogger would like to take this opportunity to remind you to grab a sandwich (or at least some Funyuns ®) now and again while you are blogging.

Taking Down Walls
Spotted during my morning blog-surf: This art group has installed viewing platforms outside of some gated communities in Los Angeles and posted about it on their blog.
On April 24, 2005, Heavy Trash volunteers deposited bright orange viewing platforms in front of three Los Angeles gated communities; Brentwood Circle, Park La Brea and Laughlin Park. The purpose of these viewing platforms is to draw attention to the phenomenon of gated communities -- the fastest growing form of housing in the United States. What's funny to me is that I lived in Park LaBrea (PLB!) a few years ago and didn't like it. Its so big there that I got lost inside the community on the first day and I couldn't get out.

Just sign up for an account and use our upload tool to send your videos to Google. With all these passionate members why not make more fun and convenient features for them, such as diaries, leaving treats or our hotel booking system dedicated just to pet-friendly establishments. Holy Spiking Charts!
Sometimes I visit Alexa to see how my blog is doing according to the Alexa elves and while I'm there I check out Blogger.com to see how they think we're doing. Today I noticed a huge jump towards the end of March.
Wow! I thought. What the heck did we do at the end of last month? Then someone way smarter than me realized Alexa must have started combining blogger.com and blogspot.com together. I would have realized that on my own. In a few more minutes. After all possible conspiracy theories had been exhausted. Anyway, just saving you the trouble—this has nothing to do with the ancient Egyptians no matter how obvious that may seem at first.

Video Blogging?
There's a little Thursday morning debunking going on over at Shellen.com. Specifically on the video blogging front. Blogger is not launching video posting this week. Believe you me, we'll point to Google's video submission experiment when there's something for you to try out.

Not a fad
I like this quote from the latest Knowledge@Wharton piece:
Wharton legal studies professor Dan Hunter puts blogging right up there with the printing press when it comes to sharing ideas and disseminating information. "This is not a fad," says Hunter. "It's the rise of amateur content, which is replacing the centralized, controlled content done by professionals."Strong words, but then again perhaps Dan Hunter would make a good blogger.

Us Road Trip 2005
Darren Waters of the BBC didn't think of himself as a blogger until it made sense for him to share updates with friends and family during his trip across the US.
Digital postcards from a mobile phone: "While I recognise that some people have a tremendous range of opinions on a wide variety of topics, as well as a burning desire to see those opinions published online, I have been much happier as a blog reader than as a blog writer - until now."More and more people are discovering that blogging is just an easy way to share with friends and don't think of themselves as "bloggers." It seems the term carries with it some preconcieved notions. Nevertheless, US Road Trip 2005 is just the sort of way I'd expect people to make use of Blogger.

House of D
Eric posted this link to our Blogs of Note blog which only gets published in the sidebar of the Blogger dashboard: David Duchovny is blogging about his new movie, House of D. I thought it was worth another mention. Here's the film's description at IMDB:
By working through problems stemming from his past, Tom Warshaw (Duchovny), an American artist living in Paris, begins to discovery who he really is, and returns to his home to reconcile with his family and friends.David's posts are long for my scattered brain but worth focusing on if you like behind the scenes type stuff. Evan Williams hates the elderly
Or at least that's what I took away from the NYT's piece on the evolving relationship between gossip blogs and gossip columnists. Since you can't fill 40 columns with "These are different formats doing different things" why not conjure up a new v. old media smackdown! In one corner, we have octogenarian gossip Liz Smith. In the other, the Blogs That Dish.Gone are the days when FDR used to dish dirt with Walter Winchell. Sadder still is the loss of all those fabulous hats the pro-gossips used to wear. It's all been washed away by a tide of anti-hat, anti-old-lady bloggery. Ev - how could you be so cruel.

Ouch
This guy shot a construction staple through his hand and now he's blogging about putting a second story on his house—by himself. Macabre? Perhaps. Good blogging? I think so.
He slides the chamber open and calls over the foreman to take a look. Turns out the gun's NOT jammed - it's empty. I shot myself with the last staple. He writes about why he started the blog but hasn't gotten to the real work yet because there seem to be so many strange and funny things to share about the existing house. The x-ray makes me wonder how this whole thing will turn out but one thing's for sure: This house needs some serious help.Link

BlackBook Magazine
The latest issue of BlackBook is all about diaries, journals and weblogs:
"Among publishers it’s an article of faith that people no longer want to read books; they just want to write them. The old adage that everyone has a novel in them is being tested as never before, only this novel has turned out to be autobiographical. From television to the Internet, the confessional is rapidly becoming the de facto mode of expression. Everyone, it seems, wants to be heard. Responding to the spirit of the times, BlackBook invited a cross- section of the blazing talents and intellects in the culture to tear a page or two from their diaries or journals and give them to us: the result is a glimpse into the daily lives, concerns, and obsessions of some of the people who shape our world."Featured writers:
Salam Pax: "Dear Diary, 'resistance fighters' with Kalashnikovs and covered faces have spread out over the streets of our west Baghdad neighborhood."
Alexandra Kerry: "Dear Diary, I’m going on Larry King tomorrow, my first press appearance since dad lost the presidential election..."
Irvine Welsh: "Dear Diary, I’ve decided against taking part in Celebrity Big Brother—it would be crap being known as somebody who’s on the telly, rather than as somebody who’s actually done something."
Ozzie Osbourne: "Tonight I’m heading down to Fountain Studios in London to hang out with my wife on the set of X-Factor, a new television show that she’s doing with Simon Cowell, from American Idol. I’m taking my jellybeans, and hopefully I’ll be close enough to pelt Cowell in the back of the head with some."[via HardGuy]

"The idea is pretty simple: People who create video, music, photos, audio clips and other personal media can store their stuff for free on Ourmedia's servers forever, as long as they're willing to share their works with a global audience.""Ourmedia's goal is to expose, advance and preserve digital creativity at the grassroots level. The site serves as a central gathering spot where professionals and amateurs come together to share works, offer tips and tutorials, and interact in a combination community space and virtual library that will preserve these works for future generations. We want to enable people anywhere in the world to tap into this rich repository of media and create image albums, movie and music jukeboxes and more."

More Power
I just recieved an email from a Blogger user named Wayne asking if we were going to address some of the slowness issues with Blogger. We do still update Blogger Status (although there was a recent glitch with it). Performance is a huge priority for us and we're adding a bunch of new machines right now to speed things up. New machines are not an issue because here at Google we can add them quite smoothly as needed. The real issue is power—actual electricity, if you can believe it. So now we're adding more power in addition to more machines. We use Blogger for this blog and many of the people on our team use Blogger for their own, personal blogs. We don't have a super-special employee server that gives us preference over anyone else so we are just as frustrated with slowness and performance problems. That being said, we are just as eager as you to make this fix so things will be fast again. For more specifics, again, please check out the status blog.

Blogger Party A Smash Success
Thanks to everyone who came by our party last night in Austin. There were all sorts of folks showing up and it was great meeting many of you. Why Are You So Demanding?
There has been an interesting development in the Apple vs. Bloggers situation. There's more about it here: Apple Can Demand Names of Bloggers, Judge Says.
Judge James P. Kleinberg of the Santa Clara County Superior Court in San Jose, Calif., said in a 13-page ruling that Apple's interest in protecting its trade secrets outweighed the public's right to information about Apple and the right of bloggers to disseminate that.

About This Blog
Before our big May 2004 redesign the team blog was smack dab on the Blogger front page (old school Blogger). When we gave Blogger its new look, the team blog became part of the dashboard—this is a great place to reach our users because you have to be signed in to read it.The thing is, we felt a little funny going on and on in there with all sorts of infotainment from the blogosphere. I don't know about you but to me, the dashboard feels a little like my personal space. Anywhoo, we decided to launch Blogger Buzz so the Blogger team has an easy way of telling you about stuff that connects to Blogger, blogging, blogs, and bloggers. So that's what this is.

Let's call it Celebrity Bloggers in The New York Times Thursday and leave it at that. There's another article in today's Arts section about Rosie O'Donnel's blog: Need Some New Luster? Try Rosie O'Donnell's Method: Create It by the Blogful.
"One of them finally said that I should start a blog," Ms. O'Donnell said in a telephone interview from her home in upstate New York. The Small Screen
There's a nice article in the New York Times Arts section today called A Computer Is Also a Screen, Wil Wheaton Discovers about Wil, his blog, and his various other endeavors.
Thus was born wilwheaton.net, a site that celebrates his current roles: husband, stepfather to two boys, member of a comedy troupe, technophile, writer and, yes, honest, still an actor. On the Web log, or blog, he chronicles his daily life, his small victories, his disappointments, his liberal views on politics and the health of his pets. He has also written a memoir, 'Just a Geek' (O'Reilly Media, 2004), based in part on those writings."Wil wrote the forward to my book, Who Let the Blogs Out? and he also gave me a quote that I used at the beginning of chapter three:
Without my blog, I'd be just another forgotten former child actor, dug up every decade or so on a "Where are they now?" program. I'd be frustrated and broke. However, by writing in my blog, I found passion for storytelling, and maybe even a second career. I'm happy and able to support my family doing something that I love. —Wil WheatonThanks Wil, and looking forward to watching you tonight on CSI.

Blogging and Your Career
Tim Bray has written an excellent post about blogging and work.
Ten Reasons Why Blogging is Good For Your Career
You have to get noticed to get promoted.
You have to get noticed to get hired.
It really impresses people when you say “Oh, I’ve written about that, just google for XXX and I’m on the top page” or “Oh, just google my name.”
No matter how great you are, your career depends on communicating. The way to get better at anything, including communication, is by practicing. Blogging is good practice.
Bloggers are better-informed than non-bloggers. Knowing more is a career advantage.
Knowing more also means you’re more likely to hear about interesting jobs coming open.
Networking is good for your career. Blogging is a good way to meet people.
If you’re an engineer, blogging puts you in intimate contact with a worse-is-better 80/20 success story. Understanding this mode of technology adoption can only help you.
If you’re in marketing, you’ll need to understand how its rules are changing as a result of the current whirlwind, which nobody does, but bloggers are at least somewhat less baffled.
It’s a lot harder to fire someone who has a public voice, because it will be noticed. Note number 7, "Networking is good for your career. Blogging is a good way to meet people." Yes! More on that here: How to Network with Blogger.
